Williamson, WV is at the epicenter of the opioid crisis gripping the United States.
It’s a place where social, economic and environmental challenges are deeply woven into the city's narrative.
It’s also a community where hope and faith can be simultaneously hidden and ubiquitous, like the late night bible study next to the laundry mat and the stranger tracing a heart on a frozen car window. As a photographer visiting for three days in February of 2020, the juxtaposition of resilience and emptiness was striking. The fact these were encounters before the emergence of COVID-19 makes reflecting on them all the more so.
