My work is rooted in a passion for experiential learning and a childhood exploring the woods and waters of Maryland.

Matthew's curiosity for exploring the natural world has been intertwined with his photography since the day his father gave him his first film camera at the age of twelve, and his ability to translate intangible observations into evocative images is rooted in an awareness that science is tantamount to art. 

Following his passion for the biology, Matthew graduated from St. Lawrence University with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. As a student he received a school Tanner Fellowship for an independent project photographing conservation efforts on the Chesapeake Bay. Over the past eleven years Matthew's interest in experiential learning has included work as a whitewater rafting guide in Montana; sailed to the West Indies, where he traveled and explored the islands of the Lesser Antilles for eight months; conducted marine research in Maine, Maryland and Australia and served with the American Red Cross as an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer.

Matthew currently teaches at an independent school in Atlanta, GA and leads wilderness expeditions with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Matthew is available for assignments and collaboration, and a selection of his images can be licensed through Stocksy United and the National Geographic Image Collection.
